Two Updates
1. I’m moving tomorrow. I won’t deny that the decision to change my surroundings was based largely on a desire to maximally distract myself from negative emotions. Another significant component of my decision, however, was a wish to retreat with a complete lack of dignity (see link for inspiring examples) from my current complex. Yesterday the door to my hallway was tagged with gang-speak. Apparently I’m on someone’s turf. My new lodging will bring with it several benefits, including:
• A working stove
• An uncarpeted bathroom
• An absence of tawdry, circa 1970’s furniture
2. I’ve officially passed my program’s qualifying exam. This was a three-week take-home test that required us to review and synthesize subfields of neurobiology about which we presumably knew very little at the start. In addition to letter grades for each question, we received comments from the reviewing professors. For instance, a professor might write, “Overall this proposal is poorly thought out and lacking in research and feasibility of experimentation.” This professor might also be on my committee. Cheers.
